Instructional Media Accessibility Student Assistant

The Universal Design Center (UDC) is seeking a student assistant knowledgeable in English and American Sign Language to assist in the development of training materials and consultation on accessible instructional media. The qualifying student assistant will work closely will UDC staff to research and create materials related to accessibility compliance and universal design principles to ensure all members of the CSUN campus have equal and effective access to information regardless of any disability. The qualifying student will also act as a communicator for ASL and will assist with daily office operations, consulting and departmental training events as assigned.  

Job Duties

The selected candidate will assist the UDC team by:

  • Assist UDC staff with research, development and consulting on instructional materials related to accessibility and universal design standards and best practices
  • Provide informal ASL interpreting support as needed
  • Coordinate with UDC staff to schedule interpreting services 
  • Assist with training development, coordination and promotion and provide lab assistance as need
  • Provide general office support clerical duties including, answering phones, greeting visitors, making copies, running errands and handling staff calendars
  • Answering any inquiries regarding UDC services and consulting with the campus community on questions regarding accessibility and usability standards and best practices.
  • Work on other special projects for UDC staff as assigned.

Desired Skills and Qualifications

  • Current CSUN student able to commit at least one academic year
  • Knowledge of English and American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to learn things quickly
  • Ability to research information online
  • Ability to interpret information among multiple parties
  • Knowledge of Microsoft office applications
  • Knowledge of Adobe applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign
  • Ability to proofread and edit documents
  • Strategic thinker and problem solver
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff and students

Position Details

  • Hiring Department: Universal Design Center
  • Division: Academic Affairs
  • Pay: $12.15-$13. Depending on skills and experience. 
  • Work Schedule: 15- 20 hrs/week*.
    •  Schedule will be determined by the supervisor. 
    • Hours are based on department need and budget availability. 
    • Students may be allowed to work additional hours during summer and winter break periods.
